History

 

 

  • Compeer is an international organization that began in Rochester, NY, in 1973. There are close to 80 Compeer Programs in the United States, Canada and Australia.                             
  • Locally, Compeer of the Mohawk Valley, Inc. (CMV) began providing services to the Greater Utica area in 1989.
     
  • Compeer of the Mohawk Valley, is one of three of the 26 New York State programs to receive an Exemplary Status from Compeer International Headquarters.  CMV has demonstrated impressive program growth, as well as outstanding quality and breadth of services offered.                                                                                                                         
     
  • In 1996, CMV began its Compeer for Kids Program
     
  • In 1997, CMV expanded its services to Herkimer County through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.               
  • In 2001 Compeer began the Lunch Buddies Program.                                           
  • In 2006, CMV launched its Dually Diagnosed Adult Mentoring Program, which serves adults diagnosed with both mental illness and a substance abuse problem.           
  • In 2008, CMV collaborated with the Heritage Health Care Center for the  Grand Peer Program .  This program serves adults receiving mental health services while residing  at the Heritage Health Care Center                                    
  • Compeer has received recognition from the U.S. Department of Mental Health and the American Psychiatric Association.
